Taking responsibility in challenging times

Sustainability at Montanhydraulik

Our understanding of responsible behaviour

We at Montanhydraulik are aware of our responsibility - our influence on developments today and for the generations of tomorrow. Short-term, proactive action and long-term thinking are an integral part of our corporate culture. We want to help shape the dynamic and challenging future and contribute to sustainable ecological, social and societal development with our products and solutions. Because we at Montanhydraulik believe that, as part of society, we must also make our contribution.

Our commitment to a sustainable future extends to numerous areas, including reducing energy requirements, reducing the carbon footprint, promoting the circular economy and optimising resource requirements. We are committed to protecting the environment, minimising waste and establishing a sustainable supply chain with binding sustainability requirements for our partners. At the same time, we promote occupational health and safety, the health and well-being of our employees and take a responsible approach to our social responsibility.

All three dimensions of sustainability are taken into account in our daily decisions and actions: Environment, Social, Governance (ESG).

Environment

We rely on environmentally friendly technologies and materials to minimise our ecological footprint.

Social

We invest in training young people and are socially involved in the regions in which we operate.

Governance

We attach great importance to transparent and responsible corporate governance.

We focus on three-dimensional value creation that takes economic, social and ecological perspectives into account. Our aim is to promote a balance between these three dimensions in order to ensure our contribution to sustainable development.

In order to fulfil our responsibility along the supply chain, we act transparently and proactively. Employees and external stakeholders can use our digital complaints portal to confidentially submit information about possible misconduct at any time - directly to our Chief Compliance Officer. Every report is carefully examined in order to consistently prevent misconduct and achieve sustainable improvements. Find out more in our policy statement or use our complaints portal.

Sustainability is more than just a trend - it's a commitment. We are constantly working to optimise our processes, reduce our carbon footprint and drive sustainable innovation.

Montanhydraulik - Enabler of the energy transition

Our products and solutions play a decisive role in the fight against climate change and are a key enabler of the energy transition. The growing global demand for energy faces one of the most important challenges of our time: reducing emissions of climate-damaging gases. Our hydraulic cylinders and systems are indispensable components in numerous applications that enable the expansion of renewable energies and contribute to decarbonisation.

Hydropower

Worldwide hydraulic steel construction infrastructure projects pursue the goal of converting hydropower into renewable energy. Our hydraulic systems control the sluice gates of such dams and enable precise regulation of the water flow, which is then used to drive the turbines installed in the dam. Thanks to their reliable operation, our systems make a significant contribution to generating large quantities of clean, renewable energy - an important pillar of the global energy transition.

In addition to generating energy, large-scale infrastructure projects of this kind enable an economic upturn in the regions and the creation of a large number of jobs, which in turn leads to a social upturn.

Wind power

Our products are indispensable for the erection and commissioning of wind turbines for the utilisation of wind energy. Every wind turbine requires powerful mobile cranes that work safely and efficiently thanks to our hydraulic cylinders. The interaction of our support, luffing and telescopic cylinders as well as other hydraulic cylinders in the mobile crane make it possible to erect wind turbines with a total height of well over 100 metres and thus convert wind into energy. Without our hydraulic cylinders, the rapid expansion of wind turbines, which play a key role in reducing CO₂ emissions, would not be possible.

In addition, our hydraulic systems in jack-up vessels are the basis for ensuring that the jack-up vessels have a secure footing during the construction of offshore wind farms and that wind farms can be erected off the coast. Off-shore wind farms represent another important building block on the road to carbon neutrality.

Our cylinders are also used in other sustainable technologies. In wave power plants, they make it possible to utilise the kinetic energy of the sea to generate electricity. In the field of flood protection, they are an integral part of protection systems that protect coastal regions and urban areas from flooding - an increasingly important factor in the face of growing extreme weather events.

Montanhydraulik repair & service as a decisive sustainability factor

We maximise the life cycle of our products and systems

Instead of scrapping hydraulic cylinders once they have reached the end of their service life, Montanhydraulik Reparatur & Service focusses on sustainable reconditioning. Worn components are replaced in a targeted manner, cylinders are completely overhauled and brought up to date. This saves valuable resources and contributes to an environmentally friendly circular economy.

Our repairs and services are not only an economical alternative to a new purchase in the event of regular wear and tear, but also in the event of damage caused by external influences such as collisions or high load peaks. Instead of a complete replacement, we offer customised repairs - efficient, resource-saving and sustainable.

Montanhydraulik offers a worldwide repair service for its own and third-party cylinders. Our range of services extends from detailed diagnosis, repair and sample production to on-time delivery. Thanks to our many years of expertise and state-of-the-art processes, we significantly extend the service life of cylinders and reduce the environmental impact - for a sustainable and responsible industry.

Insight Montanhydraulik -
Concrete projects and initiatives

Renewable energy

We have installed photovoltaic systems at almost all of our German sites in order to increasingly switch our energy supply to renewable sources. At our plant in Holzwickede alone, we generate an output of 1.2 MWp and an annual electricity production of 1025 MWh with a PV system. This amount of electricity could theoretically supply around 300 households per year.

Energy efficiency

We introduced a certified energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001:2018 at Montanhydraulik GmbH in 2025, enabling us to systematically monitor and continuously improve our energy performance. As part of these measures, we upgraded the lighting at all German locations to energy-efficient LED technology. This significantly lowers our energy consumption and reduces our CO₂ emissions by around 400 tons per year.

Circular economy

We collect the steel chips produced during material processing and hand them over to specialised recycling companies that process these valuable raw materials and return them to the production cycle. Cooling lubricants and oils are also processed and reused in a closed-loop system. Thanks to these and other measures, we achieve a recycling rate of over 95%.

Research project Montanhydraulik Boost Technology

Montanhydraulik Boost Technology refers to a research initiative aimed at significantly increasing the service life of our hydraulic cylinders while maintaining or even reducing material usage. Through this in-house project, Montanhydraulik makes an innovative contribution to the sustainable and resource-efficient design and production of hydraulic cylinders exposed to high cycle loads. In addition, the project enables a proven reduction in energy consumption across the entire value chain – effectively lowering the product carbon footprint of our cylinders.

Research project to reduce energy consumption in the coating process

As part of a development project, Montanhydraulik is researching a modern and innovative coating technology. This new process has the potential to reduce the energy required for piston rod coating by up to 80% compared to current methods. The aim is to make a significant contribution to improving energy efficiency and supporting sustainable development within Montanhydraulik.

Integrity and transparency are the basis of our sustainable success. We are committed to fair and responsible business practices - towards our customers, partners and employees.

Material compliance - Our commitment to the highest material standards

Montanhydraulik has been using a modern material compliance system since summer 2023 in order to meet the increasing requirements of the REACh Regulation and the Waste Framework Directive. This is also our response to the growing social awareness of critical substances in products.

The REACh Regulation obliges companies to inform customers about substances of very high concern (SVHC) in products as soon as their concentration exceeds 0.1 per cent by mass. In addition, corresponding articles must be registered in a database of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in order to enable safe ejection from the material cycle.

To implement these requirements efficiently, Montanhydraulik uses a specialised SAP module that records the relevant substance information directly in the material master. This ensures seamless customer communication and enables the creation of the required ECHA dossiers. Sustainability and the protection of people and the environment are our top priorities. We have therefore appointed a Material Compliance Officer (MCO) to monitor the recording and processing of all relevant data. He is also available to advise customers and employees.
